Community Based Programs

Goal for the Department:
To develop and monitor a community led process, where community will plan, implement and monitor development activities which will enable sustainable interventions and make a positive impact in the community.

Urban interventions, TRAC Sector:

Street Vendors Programme :

Street vendors are an integral component of urban economies around the world. As distributors of affordable goods and services, these workers provide consumers with convenient and accessible retail options and form a vital part of the social and economic life of a city. Street vending as an occupation has existed for hundreds of years. Street vendors face lot of problems from money lenders, city cooperation, Police, shop owners. For the empowerment of   street Vendors and to create   less or unwanted dependency on money lenders, we want to ignite a spark among the street vendors to be responsible citizen and to lead dignified life.

 

Objective :-

 » To empower   street vendors , to create an opportunity for them to form self help groups  and  to build social responsibility among         themselves and lead a dignified life.
» To empower vendors to have regular meetings and  make them save money.

» To make them aware of their rights and social responsibility.

» To make them less dependent on money lenders.

» To make them responsible citizens for leading a dignified life.

Self Help Group has been  formed  in the targeted area after conducting  survey of 650 street vendors in Mysore city .The survey  was conducted to know their  social and economic status .we have planned to be form 20 SHG in this financial  year, we have already  formed 10 SHGs .Capacity building on the rights and duties of street vendors, Basic concepts of SHGs, Book keeping have been provided.

Samudaya Jagruthi samithis :

We are working in 6 underprivileged areas of Mysore ,where we have formed Samudaya Jagruthi samithis (SJS) to empower communities to take ownership and responsibility of their own development .
SJS is a group of community members who have shown keen interest in the development of their areas representing all groups in their areas. The committee  will be  responsible to work together  and carry forward the project initiatives.   This committee will comprise of active persons/volunteers from the wards.

The members of “Samudaya Jagruthi Samithi ” will be given training on constructive questioning  , mobilizing resources from the respective Government departments to implement development activities in their respective areas. Monitoring support is given to these committee members to ensure the quality of programs at least for a period of three year to sustain efforts.

Mass Awareness programme:

We are surrounded with various social problems which merit  consideration and initiative . As a  constructive and responsible NGO it is our duty to create awareness amongst the general public  on all social problems/Issues.

Objective:-To make people aware of local problems , issues and  encourage  them  to get involved in problem solving and finding suitable solutions.

We use various means and methods like street plays, tableaus, pamphlets ,jathas ,video shows, quiz ,painting ,singing competitions to create awareness among the public. The project has optimally adopted a perfect blend of all Information, Education and Communication [IEC]  activities and tools to achieve this. The awareness about the  various  social issues is created adopting  the following tools:

 

  • Sports
  • FM Radio ,Mass Media
  • Posters – Handbills – Stickers – Wall paintings
  • Audio – Video Campaigns
  • Orientation to SHGs, Youth Groups  and other organized groups  .
  • Quiz competition ,singing competition

 

 

  •  Awareness and Supporting Plastic free Mysore: The objective is to make Mysore city environmental friendly and plastic free   We are motivating other civic groups and students to implement this programme. The activity  aims to involve all associations, schools, colleges and Government  to actively involve in creating awareness in Mysore city. The project will focus in building a group to co-ordinate these activities and sustain these activities for a longer period.

 

  • Awareness on RTI [Right to information ] for enabling the community to access required information from the control of public authorities.

 

  • Awareness on RTE [Right to education] To facilitate all eligible children to receive 100% compulsory education in the project area.

 

 

Capacity building activities for Government Functionaries and officials:

The Government functionaries will be oriented about the project in reaching and conveying the benefits to the needy. The concerned departmental officials will be oriented and will work in greater efficiency in reaching out and providing the benefits to community. The project staff is training  all government officers and staff involved in the project area to facilitate these schemes to reach the people.

Citizen participation committee: 

The objective is to facilitate and strengthen Citizen participation committees to  address urban issues and truly represent their community. Urban Health Centres will be given special focus  and its services needs to be improved involving Government. Capacities of Citizen participation committee  will be built to own the responsibility of public issues focusing more on urban  health.

 

Rural interventions:

Village Health and Sanitation and Nutrition Committees Federations:

Under National Rural Health Mission Government has formed Village Health and Sanitation and nutrition Committees and has  given representation to the  community to be a part of  the public health system in the grassroots. This democratic process has encouraged the committee members to participate in overseeing the health of their village by preparing a village health plan for their village and monitoring the health activities of the village. They are also given an untied fund of Rs.10000   to fulfill the basic health needs of the village. V-LEAD had been given the responsibility of building the capacities of these committees in  Mysore and Hassan districts in the previous financial year by  the Government  of Karnataka. We have trained the committees and members in a very ambitious project called Capacity building of village health and sanitation committee and other health committees in Mysore and Hassan Districts.

The empowered members have come forward and they wanted us to facilitate to federate these VHSCs at the hobli level.

Federation of  VHSC members is formed at the  Taluk and Hobli levels in Mysore District . This has brought about  a strong community presence   in  developing and involving public in health department activities . Rapport with community and Government departments have   increased through this method and sustainability of the health and sanitation services in the project area will be achieved . Enhancing monitoring systems through active follow up and proper implementation of the activities is given focus.

 

Capacity Building of Taluk Planning and Monitoring committee:

Under National Rural Health Mission  the Government has formed Taluk Planning and Monitoring committee and has  given representation to people representatives and  community members to be part of public health system to monitor and take a active part  in the health activities in the taluk.

• Increasing their awareness of health related issues and support measures needed to  safeguard the health of the community.

• Educating them on formulating village health plan and effective monitoring and evaluation of the health plan.

Strengthening of ARS/ P&M and other committees resulting in their behaviour change and make them actively participate in health activities and thus improve the overall health status of the Community.

 

Gramavani News Letter:

Objective:

1.To empower communities who are interested  in the  development of their village .

2.To work as a link between Government, NGO's and the community  .

3.To have a continuous contact with the community and make them part of the developmental initiatives .

The newsletter was started with aim of reaching out to large number of socially concerned and motivated individuals in the community, it will be a resource tool for those individuals who believe that information is power, and change is possible with information. It will also works as a guide for  local activists, Government and field staff of NGO’s as  Gramavani  covers latest information on laws, acts, Government schemes etc  Gramavani started publishing reports on   health and then has started covering development issues. The newsletter publishes events, reports ,articles etc.  with the focus of   providing  opportunities to community members and  Government officials  to write articles. Presently we are circulating nearly 1500 copies in  Mysore district.
